Biography

Anthony Rotolo is an artist born in Brooklyn whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, printmaking, photography, and conceptual media. His formal visual education began at New York City’s High School of Art and Design and continued at the School of Visual Arts.

His studio practice is informed by a career in visual communication spanning four decades. He advanced to leadership roles as an Executive Creative Director and principal, guiding creative strategy for major companies and established brands. That experience with evolving media, technology, and visual communication continues to shape his attention to structure, image, and meaning.

His current paintings use abstraction, layered surfaces, saturated color, and shifting signals to explore memory, movement, transformation, and the tension between control and discovery.

Artist Statement

My work begins with movement, both the physical act of painting and the instability of perception. I build surfaces through layered brushwork, dragged pigment, scratches, abrasion, repeated impressions, and erasure. The paintings remain open, moving between atmosphere, landscape, body, and abstraction.

Recent work explores signal, interference, biological transformation, and memory. Forms gather, divide, dissolve, and transmit rhythmically across the painted canvas. Saturated color moves through translucent passages, while repeated marks suggest cells, digital noise, afterimages, or fragments of an environment.

My background in visual communication and creative direction informs my sensitivity to systems and composition. In the studio, intuition, accident, and material resistance disrupt that structure, creating a negotiation between intention and discovery.
